MMIW NC Virtual Race

Additional Information

The MMIW NC Coalition Virtual event is a race at your own pace and place. You can run, walk, bike, hike, canoe, kayak, basically, any movement anywhere. Our mission for this virtual race is to raise awareness and bring solidarity with Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirits, Relatives, victims, grieving families, and individuals working on the frontlines to end this problem of violence against our Indigenous relatives. This year's event proceeds will go to the MMIW Coalition of NC for the conference at UNCW.

Those who register after the April 1st deadline will still get a t-shirt, but it will likely not arrive in time for the event. If this is you, please wear red or any other MMIW NC t-shirt you have for pictures and to show solidarity!

About Us #MMIWNC

About Us

MMIWNC is a charitable organization USA registered 501c3 nonprofit, donations to MMIWNC are tax deductible.

May 5 marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. While the 2016 #NoDAPL and #MeToo movements have helped bring attention to Indigenous and women’s issues in general, little has been done at a policy level to address the high numbers of women who go missing in Indian Country. An alarming number of Indigenous women and girls disappear or are murdered each year. The absence of consistent, standardized reporting on the issue has prevented researchers from gaining a true understanding of the problem.

Mission and Vision

MMIW NC Coalition's mission is to build a strong foundation for healing, justice, and reconciliation for the governments (local and state), institutions and community in order to help society's attitudes and understanding of the issue (MMIW, 2018). MMIW NC vision is to provide united tribal leadership in this work by lifting up the collective voices of grassroots advocates in tribal communities.

MMIW NC is to bring our missing home and help the families of the murdered understand and cope through the process of grief.

Mission and Vision

The first goal of MMIW NC is to provide education against sexual violence to American Indian (AI) women and girls.

The second goal is teaching self-defense to women and girls in the community. Although self-defense classes are increasingly popular, especially those focused on empowering survivors, it is sometimes still met with skepticism and resistance for a variety of reasons
